In the main capitals (in both US and Brazil) it almost feels like nobody really needs to speak up, since there is so much voice already and everything is just there in the news.

Having any alternative lifestyle in the South (of both Brazil and the US) is completely different. There is appearantly a lot hypocrisy to fight and therefore, much more need to speak up, read and keep connected to what is going on in order to protect one´s integrity. A lot more responsibility.
